ATA’s Litigation Center is hosting a Negotiation Skills Training Session at ATA’s Headquarters in Washington, DC this November 16-17. This intimate event is specifically tailored for legal and claims professionals in the trucking industry. 

Everyone negotiates. Not everyone negotiates effectively. Hone your negotiation skills and develop strategies and techniques to achieve success at the bargaining table. 

In today's ever-evolving trucking legal landscape, effective negotiation skills are more crucial than ever. Whether you're negotiating highway accident claim settlements, or resolving disputes in a transactional matter, the ability to handle complex situations and secure favorable outcomes is essential. This training session has been designed to equip you with the tools and strategies needed to excel in the intricate art of negotiation.

This course is for the experienced as well as for the novice negotiator. The experienced negotiator will become more mindful and deliberate by acquiring a conscious understanding of what works and why. The novice negotiator will learn the newest and most effective framework for conducting negotiations. This course will explore various styles of negotiation, effective communication techniques, developing a negotiation plan, managing a negotiation, dealing with tactics, and closing the deal.

Instructor: Joan Stearns Johnsen

Professor Joan Stearns Johnsen (CIArb, CEDR Certified, IMI Accredited) teaches negotiation, mediation, and arbitration at the University of Florida Levin College of Law in Gainesville, Florida where she is also the Director of the law school’s Institute for Dispute Resolution. In addition to her teaching, Joan has been a practicing mediator and arbitrator for over three decades. She is on the arbitration and mediation panels of the American Arbitration Association, The International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution (“CPR”), the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (“FINRA”), and a former member of the JAMS roster. 

Joan, a leader in the dispute resolution field, is a prolific author and an experienced trainer. She has presented her negotiation training to the Bar of the City of New York for over a decade, and she continues to attract hundreds of attendees each year. Over the years Joan has conducted numerous training programs, including at the US Department of Commerce, Morgan Stanley, UBS, Wells Fargo, and The National Council of State Boards of Nursing, and the Association of US Bankruptcy Judges. Joan has also been invited to present internationally including to the Mediate First Event in Hong Kong, the Florence International Mediation Chamber in Florence, Italy, the Union International des Avocats in Paris, France, and the CPR Congress in Curitiba, Brazil. Professor Johnsen is also a past Chair of the ABA’s Section of Dispute Resolution.
