California 2018 Legal Preview: New Legislation and Cases to Watch

It’s no secret that California’s employment laws present any number of hazards for motor carriers who do business there. In this webinar, Doug Farmer and Bob Roginson, partners at the law firm of Ogletree Deakins, will provide an update on new California laws that go into effect in 2018, which employers operating in the state need to be aware of. Doug and Bob will also discuss several important cases currently pending before the California Supreme Court, whose decisions will have further implications for employers. A question and answer session will follow.

Douglas Farmer is a shareholder in Ogletree’s San Francisco office. Mr. Farmer has served as lead defense counsel to major California employers in nearly a hundred wage and hour class actions, and has tried to verdict a wide variety of employment cases in California state and federal courts. In addition, he routinely works with clients to implement compliance programs involving California pay practices, meal and rest break requirements, wage statement regulations, joint employment, piece-rate pay, and emerging California legal developments. A graduate of Harvard Law School, Mr. Farmer is a Fellow of the College of Labor & Employment Lawyers and the American Bar Foundation, and has been recognized as one of California’s leading employment lawyers in a variety of publications.

Robert Roginson is a shareholder in Ogletree’s Los Angeles office. Mr. Roginson has defended dozens of employers in class actions involving a variety of issues, including employee misclassification, meal and rest period violations, off-the-clock claims, and record-keeping violations. He also counsels employers and companies on California and federal wage and hour and pay practice laws, project labor agreements, reduction in force issues, labor relations and union matters, and retaliation and discrimination claims. Mr. Roginson is a graduate of Loyola Law School, and from 2007 to 2010 was appointed by Gov. Schwarzenegger as Chief Counsel for the California Division of Labor Standards Enforcement, where he advised and represented the California Labor Commissioner in all aspects of enforcement and interpretation of California employment law.
