ATA Honored with EPA SmartWay Affiliate Challenge Special Merit Award
Trucking Group Recognized for Advancing Work on Freight Sustainability

Arlington, Va. – Today, American Trucking Associations was honored to be named one of three national SmartWay Affiliate Challenge Special Merit Award winners by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Of the seven total awardees recognized by EPA, ATA was the only national trucking association to win the Affiliate Challenge Special Merit Award, which was presented in Orlando, Fla., at the Transportation Intermediaries Association Capital Ideas and Exhibition Conference.

“We are proud of our efforts to promote sustainability by reducing trucking’s impact on the environment,” said ATA President and CEO Bill Graves. “ATA has been a supporter of SmartWay since Day One and we believe it is a model for the business community and government to follow as they try to solve common problems.”

The SmartWay Affiliate Challenge is a national challenge developed by EPA to acknowledge organizations that participate in SmartWay and do an exceptional job supporting the partnership’s freight sustainability goals. SmartWay Affiliate Challenge Honorees have proactively initiated and executed recruiting, promotional and marketing activities that raise awareness and encourage their members to address air pollution from freight activities. These awardees serve as role models for other SmartWay affiliates and partners.

“EPA commends the Affiliate Challenge honorees for their extraordinary level of commitment, enthusiasm, and creativity in supporting EPA’s SmartWay program, and sustainable transportation,” said Christopher Grundler, director of EPA’s Office of Transportation and Air Quality. “The work in this arena helps to advance the environmental sustainability of commercial transportation and logistics bringing us all closer to achieving the shared goals of efficient goods movement and clean air.”

As a SmartWay Affiliate Challenge Honoree, ATA:

·         Presented briefings across the country and in Canada to educate and advance the merits and successes of the program;

·         Published articles and public service announcements in trade journals describing the benefits and enhancements of the program;

·         Facilitated the development of a short video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soUEVFvxppU) with ATA’s America’s Road Team congratulating SmartWay on its 10th Anniversary;

·         Promoted SmartWay through social media channels; and

·         Hosted the 2014 SmartWay Excellence Award Ceremony for carriers during its national convention.

EPA launched SmartWay in 2004 to help business improve the sustainability of their freight supply chains.  Today the Partnership consists of nearly 3,000 Partners, representing a cross section of the freight supply chain industry.  As of today, SmartWay Partners have saved over 144 million barrels of oil.  SmartWay’s clean air achievements (60 million metric tons of carbon dioxide so far) help protect the health and well-being of citizens.
