PACs 101
What is a PAC?
Federal law prohibits corporations and trade associations from contributing general treasury funds to federal campaigns. However, corporations and trade associations may form a PAC (Political Action Committee).
Through Truck PAC, the American Trucking Associations (ATA) are able to legally participate in federal election activities. Funded solely through personal contributions of authorized ATA members, Truck PAC is able to support those federal candidates who understand our issues and support the trucking industry.
Who can Truck PAC solicit?
By federal law, Truck PAC may only solicit contributions from the management and executive personnel of ATA member companies. Prior to soliciting, Truck PAC must receive a signed authorization form from the company’s primary contact. The company can only authorize one trade association per calendar year, but may grant authorization for up to five years.
Sign up online!! ATA members can now submit an online authorization form.
How does Truck PAC pick the candidates it is going to support?
Truck PAC follows a list of criteria in determining the best candidates to support. These may include committee assignments, voting record, leadership position, number of ATA members in the district/state or experience in the trucking industry.
How much can an individual contribute to Truck PAC?
Federal law limits the amount an individual may contribute to a federal PAC to $5,000 per calendar year.
How much can Truck PAC contribute to a federal candidate?
All corporate and trade association PACs are limited to $5,000 per election, per cycle. An election cycle is two years for a United States Representative and six years for a United States Senator. Each race, whether the candidate has an opponent or not, includes a primary and a general election; therefore, PACs may contribute up to $10,000 to a federal candidate.
